A flight of flamingos tore across the sky at the very moment he spoke. Had I misunderstood, then? Something else laid hidden beneath this surrounding calm. I kept running, moving up from the beach toward the forest on the hill. Little by little, the maritime pines turned into blackened, charred branches. “Beware of Fire” the sign on my path shouted! I stopped. The view was perfectly clear all the way to the sea, and in that moment I felt within myself like a wire stretched between a silent, upright authority, one that seemed to command the order of the world, and a form of rebellion that was strange to me, a dissonance.
